Some problems remain, like where does the electricity from the plug come from and can anyone afford it?
54% of our (Switzerland) Electricity comes from water power and 41% is nuclear energy, so its practicly CO2 free. But at what cost? As far as I am informed in 2005, in the U.S it was estimated that 40% of the nation's energy came from petroleum, 23% from coal, and 23% from natural gas. Nuclear power supplied 8.4% and renewable energy such as water, wind power, geothermal and solar energy supplied 7.3%. What about today?
And then there is the price. Many people I know would love to switch to solar energy, but they simply can't afford it in Switzerland...
Obviously the source. Can be improved over time. The mass production of energy using fossil fuels however is a more effective means. This combined with metering that charges less over night and you are onto a winner.
But I think plugin hybrid deisel using reprocesed chip fat is the way forward!
