Requiem for Hummer
General Motors is ready to shut down Hummer. That was the big news earlier this week after the company"s deal to sell the Hummer brand to Tengzhong, a Chinese machinery company, collapsed. The passing of Hummer gave opinion writers, pundits and bloggersand the general publican opportunity to reflect on the vehicle that perhaps best represents the excesses of the SUV era.
From the beginning, Hummer was a lightning rod, eliciting strong emotions from people who loved and hated the quintessential gas-guzzler. We collected final remembrances of the Hummer from across the web, and hope you will add your reflections and condolences.
GM Gives In To Good Taste, Closes Hummer Division
"Auto decal makers and window-tinters of the world are in mourning this afternoon...They're stopping production of the controversial phallic stand-ins⬦I propose that, at midnight ET tonight, all Hummer owners across the country pause their Girls Gone Wild DVDs and join me in a moment of silence for the fallen giant."

Hummer, R.I.P.
"In response to GM's announcement, flags across oil-rich Saudi Arabia were lowered to half-mast while the entire Exxon/Mobil board of directors were seen at a group grief counseling session. Hummer's Long Overdue Death
"Driving one of those militaristic behemoths used to be a status symbol, but after gas prices topped $4 a gallon in the summer of 2008, people began to rethink the excess. In 2008, GM sold 27,485 Hummers, down from 35,000 in 2003. In 2009, after announcing it was putting the brand up for sale, GM sold only 9,000."

The Coming Electric Car Battery Glut
By John Gartner
In advance of this fall’s launch of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, lithium ion battery manufacturers are breaking ground on manufacturing plants nearly every month. About $2 billion in federal stimulus funding has spurred the building of facilities in Michigan and Indiana that will start churning out battery packs by the end of the year. But the escalation in production has the potential to outstrip the demand for the batteries by as early as 2012.
As I said on NPR"s SAll Things Considered" earlier this week, the battery companies have understandable motivations to quickly ramp up production. For battery companies to receive the full amount of stimulus grants and loans, they must meet specified goals for production capacity. What happens if these production goals exceed the high consumer demand for electrified vehicles anticipated by automakers?
During 2010 and 2011, consumers and fleet operators who are eager to own EVs will scoop up the first units that off the line without much concern for economics. For these early adopters, the first electric cars and plug-in hybrids are Smust haves.⬝ But that is likely to be a niche market, numbering in the thousands to 10s of thousands. Remember that only about 1,000 Tesla Roadsters have been sold so far. The market appeal of EVs will have to be broadened beginning in 2012-13 to attract a more cost-conscious consumer, and that adjustment period could impact battery manufacturers who are likely to then be in full production.

Toyota Confirms RAV4 Hybrid for 2012
UK"s Autocar website reported yesterday that Jim Lentz, president of Toyota Motors Sales, confirmed development of a hybrid gas-electric version of the company"s RAV4 crossover SUV. Lentz added that Toyota"s 1.8-liter hybrid system will become the company"s Score powertrain.⬝
The RAV4 Hybrid is due in spring 2012, but only the five-door model will get the hybrid option.
HybridCars.com reported last April that the RAV4 Hybrid was in the works. The Toyota Highlander has an EPA rating of 27 in the city and 25 on the highway. As a smaller vehicle, the RAV4 Hybrid could exceed 30 miles per gallonpossibly becoming the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market. Currently, the Ford Escape Hybrid, 34 highway / 31 city, has that distinction. Hybrid fans have been hoping for a gas-electric RAV4 for several years.
The conventional Toyota RAV4, introduced in 1996, was one of the first so-called crossover SUVs, built with some of the capabilities of a truck-based SUV, but focused on many of the creature comforts of a passenger car. Since then, the vehicle has grown in size.

After Toyota Recall, Best Deals Ever for Hybrids
In an unexpected turn of events, Toyota"s safety recalls could create a jump in hybrid sales. To counteract the effects of negative publicity, Toyota is offering a sale on the 2010 Prius: $249-a-month on a three-year lease. Some dealers are also increasing residual rates and dropping finance rates.
"The programs are very aggressive," says Tom Rudnai, president of Longo Toyota in El Monte, Calif., the highest-volume Toyota dealership in the country. "We are seeing quite a bit of traffic," Rudnai told the Wall Street Journal. He added that the recall is bringing hundreds of customers for service, providing an opportunity to speak to them about deals on their next vehicle.
Hybrid competitors, most notably Honda and Ford, are trying to take advantage of Toyota"s problems. According to Autodata Corp, Honda is discounting the Honda Insight to $219 per month on a no-money down lease. The Ford Fusion Hybrid continues to sponsor American Idol, which also features competing commercials, sometimes back-to-back, for the Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.
This level of marketing, and price incentives, is unprecedented for hybrids. In recent years, when gas prices were higher, dealers were charging premiums to hybrid buyers hoping to bypass long waiting lists to purchase a Prius.

BMW Moves Methodically Toward Electric Cars
Active E, an electric 1-series, is the next text platform for a BMW electric car.
One step at a timeslowly but surelyBMW is developing the knowledge and capacity to deliver a small all-electric car by 2013. In 2009, the company began leasing an electric two-passenger version of the Mini Cooper to about 600 drivers in California, New York, and New Jersey. That program was designed to help BMW learn about real-world driving and charging experiences.
Beginning in 2011, a similar number of drivers will lease BMW"s next electric test vehicle, the four-passenger ActiveEessentially an electric-drive version of the BMW 1-series. The ActiveE will allow the company to further refine the requirements for a line of large-volume future electric cars, as part of its SMegacity⬝ project. That name, the current working title for its 2013 small electric car, is based on the idea of targeting urban commuters in, well, megacities. Although the ActiveE will cleverly package the power electronics to allow for a decent sized trunk, the Megacity is expected to be a four-seat, three-door hatchbacksimilar in size to a Honda Fit.
The ActiveE puts out 125 kilowatts (170 horsepower), a similar amount of power as found on other 1-series Bimmers. The ActiveE"s 32-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack is slightly smaller than the Mini E"s. All of the vehicles apparently are targeting about 100 miles of range on a single chargealthough aggressive driving and cold weather conditions have reduced the Mini E"s range by 20 or 30 miles according to multiple reports from drivers. That"s exactly the kind of information that BMW wants to gather from its test drivers. And that"s why the ActiveE will use liquid cooling to control temperature range, as a strategy to maintain driving range despite cold weather.
BMW appears to be very serious and specific about its electric car program. For example, the company yesterday announced it will use its plant in Lepzig to produce the electric vehicles. The inside story is that BMW executives believe that zero-emission electric cars, and fuel cells for that matter, are a mustthat is, if the company is going to meet stricter guidelines for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the world"s major global auto markets.

Hybrids, Mostly Built for Speed, Slated for Geneva
European carmakers are preparing their latest cool hybrid concepts for the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, which runs March 4 to 14. The dominant theme is green speed. Here"s a sneak peak at a few vehicle unveilings, which show some restraint on fuel economy, but hold nothing back on horsepower.
Mercedes F800 Style
Mercedes will unveil its F800 Style plug-in hybrid concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. With its 10 kWh battery pack, the car can travel up to 18 miles solely on electricityalthough perhaps not when pushed to the limits of its 4.7-second 0-60 mph acceleration and top speed of 155 mph. The combined output of the F800"s V6 gas engine with direct injection and its 109-horsepower hybrid system is about 400 total horsepower. Mercedes didn"t share its arithmetic, but estimates the average fuel economy of the F800 at 80 miles per gallon.
Other innovations include compact modular packaging of the batteries, motors and fuel cells to preserve interior space for five passengers; an instrumental panel that uses a camera to record your hand, thus allowing iPhone-like wiping, turning and zooming functions; andbelieve it notStraffic jam assist⬝ for hands-free driving at low speeds. The F800 Style could be a sign that Mercedes-Benz is serious about delivering a plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class in the next few years, as promised. The Mercedes F800 Style can also be equipped as a fuel cell vehicle.

Honda"s Hybrid Comeback: Hybrid Minivans and SUVs
Honda is developing a hybrid system suitable for larger cars such as the Odyssey minivan the Pilot sports utility vehicle. Tomohiko Kawanabe, Honda"s chief operating officer for automobile research and development, today told Reuters, "We've left the research stage and entered the field of development." Kawanabe said these vehicles could hit the US market in about three years.
Honda took an early lead in hybrid development about a decade ago, but has fallen behind Toyota and Ford in the race for appealing fuel-efficient gas-electric vehicles. Honda has been advocating a two-part efficiency strategy: diesel vehicles for larger vehicles and hybrids for cars. However, it appears that the company might be flipping that strategy by producing larger hybrids for the US market and diesels with smaller engines for Europe and Asia.
In late 2008, the company abandoned its large-vehicle diesel strategy, but held firm to its goal of producing smaller relatively affordable hybrids. In July 2009, Honda president Takanobu Ito promised to speed up production of hybrid cars, focusing on small hybrids, such as the CR-Z and a Honda Fit Hybrid. Ito said, "Our theme is hybrids." In January 2010, Ito said that it apply hybrid technology to Acura vehicles.
However, its biggest move in that direct, the 2010 Honda Insight, failed to capture interest from consumers. Last week, Honda Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo told Bloomberg that the 2010 Honda Insight might have compromised too much size in the name of efficiency, and hinted that the company might abandon plans for a gas-electric Fit. SThere are plenty of people who think that the current Fit meets their needs already⬝ Kondo said. SA hybrid version might seem expensive. Our engineers are really struggling.⬝
New Life for Honda Hybrids
In today"s interview with Reuters, Honda"s Kawanabe said the company is studying development of a small diesel engine for emerging markets including India, as well as in Europe. "If you want to compete in markets like India, and also Europe, (a small diesel engine) is necessary."

3 Tesla Employees Reported Dead in Palo Alto Plane Crash
A private plane carrying three employees of electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc., crashed this morning in a residential East Palo Alto neighborhood, killing all those aboard and damaging several local homes. Shortly after taking off from Palo Alto Airport at 7:55 am PT, the twin-engine plane went down in thick fog, hitting a PG&E tower near the Dumbarton Bridge. Nobody on the ground was injured.
The plane was a Cessna 310, registered to a company owned by Tesla's senior electrical engineer, Doug Bourn. Though the names of the passengers are being withheld at the moment, early speculation is that all three were Tesla executives. CEO Elon Musk, who was not involved in the crash, released a statement shortly after. STesla is a small, tightly-knit company⬝ said Musk. SThis is a tragic day for us."
The crash comes just a month after the company filed papers with the SEC in anticipation of a $100 million initial public offering.
Update:: Sources told Edmunds.com that the dead were Doug Bourn, 56, of Santa Clara; Brian M. Finn, 42, of East Palo Alto; and Andrew Ingram, 31, of Palo Alto. All three men were engineers for Tesla.

Branson Report Warns of Peak Oil as Early as 2015
A group fronted by Virgin CEO Richard Branson released a report this week warning that peak oil is not only real, but closer on the horizon than many might think. The Industry Taskforce for Peak Oil and Energy Security warns that demand for oil could outstrip supply as soon as 2015, a turn of events that would send ripples through nearly every economy and industry in the world. SWe must plan for a world in which oil prices are likely to be both higher and more volatile and where oil price shocks have the potential to destabilize economic, political and social activity,⬝ wrote Branson in the forward to the report. SDon't let the oil crunch catch us out in the way that the credit crunch did.⬝
The task force recommended swift action from government and business to accelerate the "green industrial revolution," as well as the creation of actionable contingency plans should an oil crisis take place before a movement away from petroleum is complete. It warned that even if immediate steps are taken, there is a risk of serious shock to the food, transportation, heating and retail sectors. As one of the world's leading travel providers, Branson's Virgin Airlines would stand to be hit particularly hard in the event of such a crisis.
Branson is just the latest billionaire to warn of an impending oil crisis. Everyone with a television set, radio or Internet connection is by now familiar with legendary oilman T. Boone Pickens' warnings on the subject. SThe oil just isn"t thereno technology can change that,⬝ Pickens told Mother Earth News in January. SAnd with China and India pushing up the global demand, new discoveries just can"t keep up with it.⬝
Both men are of course heavily invested in the transition to sustainable energy. Branson said last year that he plans to invest about $400 million in renewable energy technologies, while Pickens has invested upwards of $60 million on media promotion of his SPickens Plan⬝ alone. His total investment numbers in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

GM: "We"re Forced to Make Hybrids." But Which Ones?
Last week, General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz repeated his long-held opinion that hybrid gas-electric cars have a limited market and will not be profitable for the company. Yet, he believes GM will be forced to make more hybrids because of tougher fuel efficiency regulations. This begs the question: What hybrids should we expect from GM?
Slow and False Starts
GM currently sells hybrid versions of large SUVsthe Cadillac Escalade Hybrid and the Chevy Tahoe Hybridas well as the Chevy Silverado hybrid pickup truck. These vehicles, which sell in relatively low numbers, use the company"s two-mode hybrid system, aimed at improved fuel economy while maintaining high-performance and towing capacity.
The company had been selling mild hybrids, in the form of the Chevy Malibu, Saturn Vue, and Saturn Aurabut those have been canceled. A plug-in hybrid version of the Saturn Vue crossover SUV was also jettisonedalthough it may show up with different branding.
Cadillac Full Hybrids
According to Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics, the two-mode system will be migrating down to rear-drive sedansthe Cadillac ATS and CTS. The ATS, a luxury compact sometime referred to as a Sbaby Caddy,⬝ is expected to go on sale in the US next year. Hall expects that the next-generation CTS, scheduled for 2012, eventually will offer the next-generation hybrid system. Hall"s viewpoint is supported by General Motors announcement last month that it will set up a $246 million facility to build electric motors to power future hybrids. GM said that the newly designed electric motors would appear in 2013.

Bridgestone Unveils New Ecopia Tires
Tires are usually seen as a functional part of a vehicle that allows it to smoothly move down the road. As the environmental equation of automobiles becomes a bigger deal, tires are increasingly viewed as a key component that can play a critical role in increasing efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, "eco" tires have required a number of trade-offs: higher cost, less grip, and quicker wear.
To address these negatives, Bridgestone Corporation unveiled its latest entry in the category of environmentally friendly tires at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The company"s Ecopia EP422 family of tiresthe Dueler H/L 422 is designed for trucks, SUVs and crossoversare all-season low rolling resistance tires made from recycled materials. They each come in five sizes and claim a 36-42 percent improvement in rolling resistance compared to Bridgestone's typical tires of the same size. From that lower rolling resistance Bridgestone says owners can expect about a 4 percent fuel economy improvement.
According to Bridgestone, the increased fuel efficiency should not only pay back the increased cost of the Ecopia tires, but their entire cost before the end of their 65,000-mile life.
The 422 numbers on the tire have symbolic meaning. That's Earth Day.

Where Are the High-MPG Small Hybrids?
It was once thought that the great promise of gas-electric hybrids was to offer new levels of fuel efficiency. In other words, adding even a modest battery pack and motor to a compact or subcompact car could boost the fuel efficiency of a small car from the mid-30-mpg range into the 40- or 50-mpg range. The original two-seater Honda Insight delivered 70-mpg in real world mileage for many of its drivers. Where is the next generation of small high-mpg hybrids?
Automakers are now searching for the best technical and economic approach to small hybrids. Honda is the single carmaker that has shown an interest in smaller more affordable hybridsyet the Civic Hybrid and 2010 Honda Insight have had trouble finding customers. In fact, Honda Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo recently told Bloomberg that the 2010 Honda Insight might have compromised too much size in the name of efficiency. The company will soon introduce another small hybrid, the two-seat Honda CR-Z, followed by a gas-electric version of the Honda Fit.
SThere are plenty of people who think that the current Fit meets their needs already⬝ with its fuel efficiency, Kondo said. SA hybrid version might seem expensive. Our engineers are really struggling.⬝
Toyota Tries to Get Small with Hybrids
Toyota is showing off its Toyota FT-CHthe CH stands for compact hybridon this year"s auto show circuit. The company has also hinted at a smaller version of the Prius, and plans to unveil the Lexus CT 200h, a premium compact hybrid, at the upcoming Geneva auto show. If Toyota delivers on its promise of more hybrids throughout its entire lineup, at some point it will need to get small.
