Wind Energy in Western North Carolina: Petition to the North Carolina House to Define Our Decade

The Define Our Decade Campaign for Wind Energy in Western North Carolina is being spearheaded by student groups and community members in "The High Country!" The North Carolina Senate Bill 1068 amends the Ridge Law of 1983. The older law exempts windmills from ridges over 3000, but the interpretation of the word windmill has been contested over the years. The original drafters of the Ridge Law intended for the exemption to include wind turbines but the Attorney General, Roy Cooper, interpreted it as an exemption for ornamental or farm windmills. The current bill, pending on a vote by the NC House, limits windmills to 100 feet in height and for residential purposes only. North Carolina has enviable wind power potential. Counties like Haywood, Buncombe, Avery, and Watauga can power their lights and empower their economies if sensible legislation allows for responsibly sited wind. Do you agree?
